OpenAI has acquired Torch Health, a young healthcare technology company focused on unifying personal medical data. With the acquisition, OpenAI aims to accelerate the development of health-related AI applications, including its recently announced ChatGPT Health.
The financial details of the deal have not been officially disclosed. Media reports vary, with The Information estimating the acquisition value at around $100 million, while CNBC reports a figure closer to $60 million.
Fragmented medical data
Founded in 2024, Torch Health developed an AI-driven application designed to bring together fragmented medical data from multiple sources, such as healthcare providers, diagnostic laboratories and personal health records. The platform consolidates information including lab results, prescriptions, diagnoses and treatment histories into a single, structured overview, addressing a long-standing challenge in healthcare data interoperability.
In addition to structured clinical data, Torch also captures unstructured information that is often lost in care processes, such as summaries or recordings of consultations, care instructions and contextual notes. By preserving this information alongside formal medical records, the platform supports continuity of care across providers and over time.
At the core of Torch’s technology is the use of AI to make aggregated health data more accessible and actionable. This includes summarising complex medical information, identifying trends and patterns, and presenting insights in a way that is easier for patients and clinicians to interpret.
New way to manage your health
According to OpenAI, integrating Torch’s capabilities into ChatGPT Health “opens up a new way to understand and manage your health.” The acquisition aligns with OpenAI’s broader strategy to enable its AI models to work with structured, user-authorised data, rather than relying solely on conversational input.
The move follows shortly after OpenAI’s preview of ChatGPT Health, a service intended to support a wide range of health-related use cases, such as explaining lab results, supporting lifestyle interventions and helping patients prepare for clinical consultations. With Torch’s technology, OpenAI strengthens its position in consumer-facing digital health while laying the groundwork for future collaboration with healthcare providers and platforms.
Torch’s founders describe their mission as building “a medical memory for AI,” enabling a complete and connected view of a person’s health data. By joining OpenAI, they aim to scale this vision far beyond what would have been possible independently.
ChatGPT Health
Earlier this month OpenAI unveiled ChatGPT Health. Designed to support healthcare professionals, it helps users better understand their health and prepare for medical conversations. The service addresses the fragmentation of health data by allowing users, with explicit consent, to link medical records and wellness apps such as Apple Health and MyFitnessPal into a separate, protected workspace within ChatGPT. This enables more relevant insights into test results, lifestyle patterns and care preparation.
Developed in close collaboration with healthcare professionals, ChatGPT Health focuses on everyday health questions and long-term insights, not diagnosis or treatment. Health data is encrypted, isolated from other chats and never used for model training, giving users full control over their information.
