Rutgers University and RWJBarnabas Health are launching a new healthcare innovation hub with Amazon Web Services (AWS), designed to turn problems identified by clinicians into technology prototypes that can ultimately be tested in healthcare practice. Rather than creating another standalone AI laboratory, the partners want to establish a permanent route from clinical need to development and implementation.

The Rutgers/RWJBarnabas Health Innovation Hub will bring together clinicians, researchers and students from medicine, engineering, computer science, business and other disciplines. AWS will provide cloud and artificial intelligence technology, technical expertise and access to its wider Cloud Innovation Centers network. Operations are expected to begin this fall at the Health and Life Science Exchange (HELIX) in New Brunswick, New Jersey.

The model is particularly relevant as health systems struggle to move digital and AI innovations beyond pilots. Rutgers and RWJBarnabas Health are attempting to organise that process around healthcare problems identified within the health system itself, rather than starting with technology and searching for a clinical application afterwards.

From clinical need to rapid prototype

The first cohort is expected to consist of up to five interdisciplinary teams. They will work on challenges identified by Rutgers faculty and clinicians from RWJBarnabas Health, New Jersey's largest academic health system. Projects will run for four to ten weeks and use rapid prototyping to develop and test possible solutions.

Potential areas include clinical decision support, hospital operations, medical and interprofessional education, student health and health equity. Faculty members and clinicians will mentor the teams and evaluate projects during development, while AWS will provide cloud computing credits, operational support and technical mentoring from its engineers.

The ambition extends beyond producing prototypes. Promising projects should be able to progress into Rutgers' academic activities and RWJBarnabas Health's clinical innovation programmes, creating a more continuous route from an identified problem towards research, testing and potential real-world application.

That distinction matters. Healthcare innovation programmes often generate promising pilots but lack a structure for moving them into routine care. By involving the health system from the identification of a problem onwards, the partners aim to make clinical relevance part of the development process rather than something that has to be demonstrated afterwards.

Building on an existing AI infrastructure

The new hub does not start from scratch. Rutgers Health and RWJBarnabas Health have already developed a joint infrastructure for healthcare AI, including an AI Center of Excellence. According to a case study published by the American Hospital Association in 2025, the partners use joint governance to align AI initiatives with clinical priorities, ethical requirements and strategic objectives.

That existing approach also illustrates how the organisations are trying to measure the value of AI. Outcomes include direct clinical measures such as mortality, intensive care admissions and falls, alongside operational measures including documentation time, staff burnout, workflow efficiency and return on investment. AI systems deployed through the programme are subject to continued monitoring, clinical validation and refinement.

The new innovation hub adds an earlier stage to that infrastructure. Students and multidisciplinary teams can develop and test solutions before potentially moving successful concepts into research and clinical innovation programmes. One project already emerging from previous collaboration is an intelligent coaching system that uses students' academic progress to provide personalised AI-generated feedback alongside individual coaching.

Innovation organised around implementation

The approach reflects a broader change in healthcare innovation. Access to AI models and cloud infrastructure is becoming easier, but healthcare organisations still need mechanisms for selecting relevant problems, involving clinicians, testing solutions and deciding which projects deserve further investment.

Rutgers and RWJBarnabas Health are effectively trying to institutionalise that pathway. The long-term goal is a self-sustaining model in which successful projects attract further research support, collaborators and industry partnerships, while new teams continue working on healthcare challenges.

There is an important caveat: the hub is only now being launched, so its ability to produce solutions that reach routine patient care still has to be demonstrated. Its significance lies primarily in the model being built around that challenge.

For other health systems, that may be the most relevant part of the initiative. Scaling healthcare AI requires more than access to increasingly capable technology. It also requires an organisational structure capable of turning real clinical problems into tested solutions — and of stopping projects that fail to demonstrate value before they become permanent pilots.
